There’s a plethora of reasons why parents choose to homeschool their children. Here are the three main reasons I’ve heard most often in meeting with other homeschool parents:
- Religion – wanting to raise children with a strong Christian upbringing
- Academics – public school education is lacking and/or curriculum not meeting student’s needs
- Special Needs – child is ADHD and has trouble focusing, child is gifted and gifted program only meets for an hour per week, child has difficulty adjusting to school life
My personal reasons fall under categories 2 and 3. My daughter skipped a grade and was bullied for it, so we decided to try the homeschool route for a year.
Even though I view school through a secular lens, most of the homeschool support groups in my area are religious-based.
There is a co-op called One Day Academy where I take her (as you can imagine) one day per week. She has two hour classes in English, science and math. During the rest of the week I follow the teacher manuals and help her with school work and grade her tests.
On my own I teach her American history, health and Spanish. Twice a week I take her to a homeschool gymnastics class for physical education.
I like One Day Academy because it gives her that social interaction she craves and it gives us structure to our work week. The only thing I’m not thrilled about is that the science class is from a fundamentalist Christian point of view. So, I told here that there are lots of views out there, and this is one of them. We also read science books together with a secular view.
On the plus side, the science class has lots of hands-on experiments each week, which keeps her focused. Also, I’m glad my kitchen is not a science lab!
Even though ODA provides guidelines for work to be done, I love the academic freedom that homeschool allows. For example, if my daughter, Rylee, is interested in a subject we can spend two hours on it as long as all the other subjects get completed by week’s end.
So far my daughter’s needs are being met academically and socially. Let’s hear it for homeschooling!
P.S. – If you’re serious about getting healthy, but need help getting started, try my S.L.I. Method on my other website ShesLosingIt.com. Only YOU can do the work, but I can give you the tools that I’ve learned over the past four years about nutrition, exercise and overcoming excuses.
